THE JUDAS KISS

THE JUDAS KISS full score: page 1

Program Note

THE JUDAS KISS is a contemporary musical piece that explores the themes of betrayal and the loss of innocence. It draws upon two moments from J.S. Bach's Saint Matthew Passion - the chorale "O Haupt voll Blut und Wunden" and the final recitative of Jesus, when he implores his Father "Lord, why have you forsaken me?" These fragments are combined and distorted as the piece progresses, reflecting the journey from naivety to cynicism.

The piece was commissioned by Blair Bolinger and the Curtis Insitute of Music for an all-Bach concert with the Curtis Brass Ensemble and delves into the betrayal experienced by Jesus Christ as well as the broader themes of betrayal in the world. It examines one of the most emotional moments in the Passion story, and offers a thought-provoking perspective on the themes of faith, trust, and betrayal.
