Program Note
Kokopelliana is a musical tribute to the rich cultural heritage of Native American mythology, specifically the legendary figure from the lands were the territory of the Quechcan, Yuman, Hohokam, and Ancestral Puebloan peoples. Kokopelli. This flute-playing deity is said to bring new life and banish winter, and has captured the imagination of many.
As a non-Native American composer, I sought to approach this subject with reverence and respect. I drew inspiration from Kokopelli's qualities of playfulness, mystery, warmth, and generosity, and attempted to capture these traits in the music.
Kokopelliana was commissioned for flutist Bianca Garcia and organist Michael Lodico, both alumni of The Curtis Institute of Music. The premiere took place at St. John's Episcopal Church in Washington, D.C. on March 6, 2013.
I dedicate this piece to Meredith Cabell and Cathy Montoya on the occasion of their wedding, and express my deep gratitude to Bianca and Michael for their exceptional musical abilities. I hope that this music will bring joy and inspiration to all those who experience it, and offer a small tribute to the rich cultural heritage of the First Nations that birthed this mythology.
